Monday's impressions

"This is the church at its best, out to defend the defenseless. And they're Catholic."
some in the church's leadership have been "appalled" at how Republican politicians used "opposition to abortion to capture the Catholic vote in 2002 and 2004. By putting itself squarely on the liberal side of the immigration debate, Reese said, the church's hierarchy can "go on the record and show that the Roman Catholic Church is not in the back pocket of the Republican Party."
This article in the Washington Post is a must. Whether one is Catholic or not, whether it is PC or not to be Catholic, the truth of the matter is that the Church has in many places and at various times sided with the poor and the unproctected of society. To be Catholic is to be pro life, yes, but pro-life in the full sense of the word. It is to be concerned for the unborn fetus, but to expand that concern to its life out here in the world. It is to have social concerns that will give that fetus a better chance at life, a decent life. It is to side with humanistic social policies.

The Post is also running a series of articles on its Sunday Magazine on the college admissions frenzy. Have people lost their minds. Americans at times seemto be like a metaphorical car out of control heading blindly towards the abyss of uber competetiveness, ends by any means, as if that were the only way to be successful in life. I've known plenty of Ivy Leaguers that went nowhere with their liberal arts degrees and a lot of community college graduates with very satisfying lives. It is not necessary to make over 100k a year! Get a grip!
Enough with the greed!!!

This list of Books to read to have a different view of the world is a bit outdated, but it is a good reminder that life does not have to be a balancing act on the edge of a cliff. (via Rebecca's pocket)

Keanu Reeves told an interviewer he learned something filming a rape scene with Hilary Swank for "The Gift" - "that some of the ladies don't mind it . . . Hah, that's awful to say." Has somebody elucidated this person that if you like it and consent, it is many things but not rape?
